Art

Art and Design empowers children to express their ideas in different forms. Children are given the opportunity to develop creativity through a range of media, artists and cross curricular links, providing them with an appreciation for a wide range of interpretations and style of art. Pupils research core skills related to key figures such as artists, architects and sculptors, evaluating the skills and knowledge of this style whilst transferring this into their pieces.

Art education is an important part of the Learning without Limits curriculum:

  • All children complete three half-terms of art learning each academic year (alternating with design technology). The art curriculum is carefully sequenced through essential knowledge and a skill-based progression framework.
  • Despite being a specific subject domain in its own right, art forms valuable connections between other subject areas. For example, art can be evaluated through sources in history, graphic scores in music and through digital media in computing.
  • A range of art enrichment projects are offered throughout the year, including the annual Art Day. Local artists are invited into school to share the skills and expertise.
  • Children’s art is shared in school and beyond. Work is routinely displayed throughout the school environment and in the local area. Children’s recent work linked to the Radcliffe Regeneration project is visible around key construction sites.

What are the key strands of art at Gorsefield?

Art is organised into six key strands:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Printing
  • Sculpture
  •  Collage
  • Digital art

These strands are revisited throughout the Learning without Limits curriculum, to ensure that knowledge and skills are built on previous learning experiences.
